Our Verdict

Denticon is the pioneering veteran of cloud dental software — it's been cloud-based since 2003, over a decade before most competitors even started thinking about it. Now part of the Planet DDS ecosystem alongside Apteryx (imaging), Cloud 9 (ortho), and MyTooth (patient engagement), Denticon has evolved into a full platform play called DentalOS. With 13,000+ practices, major DSO clients like Coast Dental (88 locations) and Sage Dental (140 locations), and a string of acquisitions that filled every product gap, Planet DDS is the enterprise cloud platform that deserves more recognition for what it's built. Pricing is available through a personalized demo.

Full Review

What Is Denticon?

Denticon is a cloud-based dental practice management system built by Planet DDS. It's one of the oldest cloud dental PMS products on the market — launched in 2003, a full decade before most cloud competitors emerged. That head start matters: Denticon has had 20+ years to refine its cloud architecture, build enterprise features, and earn the trust of large dental organizations.

Planet DDS has expanded Denticon into a broader platform called DentalOS through strategic acquisitions: Apteryx (cloud imaging with AI, acquired 2020), Cloud 9 (orthodontic practice management, acquired 2023), and Legwork (patient engagement). The most recent addition, MyTooth, launched in January 2026 as a mobile-first patient engagement layer built directly into Denticon.

The result is an integrated ecosystem where PMS, imaging, orthodontics, patient engagement, and payments all come from one company with a unified platform vision. The open API (DentalOS) enables enterprise integrations for DSOs with custom tech stacks.

Planet DDS's customer list reads like a who's who of large dental organizations: Dental Care Alliance, Smile Brands, Dental365, Coast Dental (88 locations, selected Jan 2026), Sage Dental (140 locations, selected Oct 2025), and many more.

Key Features

Scheduling

Advanced scheduler with SmartAssist — a check-in to check-out workflow that guides staff through each patient visit. Quick Fill handles last-minute openings by automatically filling from waitlists. Internal and external referral management. SSO (single sign-on) across locations — log in once, access every location. Automated appointment messaging for confirmations and reminders, plus two-way messaging.

For multi-location groups, the SSO and cross-location scheduling are meaningful workflow improvements over systems that require separate logins per location.

Insurance & Claims

Batch claims submission with a high first-pass acceptance rate. Automatic 835 posting (ERA) eliminates manual payment reconciliation. Task Manager for collections and pre-authorization tracking. AutoEligibility (launched November 2025) provides real-time insurance verification through DentalXChange integration.

The claims workflow is built for volume — batch processing across multiple locations from a centralized view. This is enterprise dental infrastructure, not a single-practice claims tool.

Billing & Payments

Planet DDS Pay is embedded payment processing for both Denticon and Cloud 9. Text-to-pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, automated payment posting to eliminate manual entry, and automated balance reminder texts and emails. PCI compliance is handled within the platform. Practices report it as the "best payment solution we've ever used."

Imaging (Apteryx)

Apteryx brings device-agnostic, cloud-based 2D and 3D imaging with unlimited cloud storage. DICOM format for universal compatibility means it works with any sensor manufacturer — giving practices full flexibility in their hardware choices. FDA-cleared AI overlays for X-ray analysis, with claims of up to 30% improvement in case acceptance. Browser-based image manipulation, secure image sharing portal for referrals, and unlimited support with no caps on tickets.

Apteryx is a standalone product that also integrates natively with Denticon. If you're already using Apteryx imaging with another PMS, that's an easy entry point into the Planet DDS ecosystem.

AI Features

Three AI capabilities as of early 2026:

AI Assist — proactive insights into patient treatment needs, surfaced within Denticon.

AI Voice Perio — launched February 2026, this is hands-free periodontal charting built directly into Denticon. It's the first AI and voice-powered perio system built into a cloud PMS. Early, but it signals Planet DDS is investing in AI-powered clinical workflows.

Apteryx AI — FDA-cleared X-ray analysis with AI overlays for pathology detection and diagnostic support.

Patient Engagement (MyTooth)

Launched January 2026, MyTooth is a mobile-first patient experience layer built directly into Denticon. Online appointment scheduling, digital intake forms with real-time Denticon sync, custom branding per location, centralized dashboard for multi-location management, and role-based access controls.

MyTooth's per-location custom branding is smart for DSOs that operate multiple brands — each location can have its own patient-facing identity while running on the same backend.

Orthodontics (Cloud 9)

Cloud 9 is the only fully cloud-based PMS built specifically for orthodontic practices. Ortho-specific scheduling, new patient tracking and task automation, treatment planning and ortho charting, insurance and billing for ortho, and multi-location support. Trusted by multiple ortho groups. If you're a DSO or group with orthodontic locations, having Cloud 9 alongside Denticon under one platform umbrella is a real advantage.

Analytics

Native analytics with 100+ reports and no external integrations required. Dashboard Bundle includes Morning Huddle, Production Analysis, Collections Analysis, Provider Breakdown, and more. Enterprise reporting with filtering by organization, office, or regional area. Scheduled automated report delivery. Financial forecasting and staff utilization reports. Data Share capabilities for custom reporting. Multi-location centralized real-time reporting.

Stronger out of the box than most competitors. Not as customizable as tab32's BigQuery data warehouse for advanced BI, but you won't need a data engineer to get value — 100 pre-built reports covers most operational questions.

Security

100% cloud-based with advanced security features and HIPAA compliance. SSO across locations. Granular role-based access control with detailed audit trails of all user activity. Single patient record across all locations eliminates duplicates. Planet DDS claims 40% average savings in total cost of ownership versus traditional on-premises systems and a significant increase in business valuation from cloud adoption.

Multi-Specialty Support

Denticon supports general dentistry, orthodontics, oral surgery, periodontal, pediatrics, and endodontics — all from one platform. Advanced custom macros for treatment plans and progress notes. Internal and external referral management. This breadth means a DSO with mixed specialty locations can run everything on one system rather than piecing together different PMS products per specialty.

Implementation

All implementation is handled in-house by Planet DDS — no third-party contractors. Solo practice timeline is approximately 60 days. DSO timeline is roughly 8 weeks per location, with multiple locations transitioning simultaneously. Data and image conversion from previous systems, super-user training, and on-site support for launch day are included. Planet DDS has migrated practices from 60+ competing technologies including Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Open Dental, Curve Dental, Carestream, and many others.

Pricing

Planet DDS does not publish pricing. A "See Denticon Plans" link exists on the site pointing to /denticon-plans/, but the page wasn't captured in our research. "Book a Demo" and "Request a Callback" are the primary CTAs.

Here's what we can piece together:

  • Planet DDS claims 40% average savings in total cost of ownership versus traditional on-premises systems
  • Major DSOs with 88-140+ locations are choosing Denticon, which suggests competitive enterprise pricing at scale
  • Individual practice pricing isn't publicly available, but industry estimates place Denticon in the mid-range to premium tier on a per-location basis for the base platform
  • Apteryx, MyTooth, Planet DDS Pay, and Cloud 9 may carry additional costs depending on the bundle

Our advice: If you're a multi-location group, ask about the full DentalOS bundle pricing — Denticon + Apteryx + MyTooth + Planet DDS Pay. The platform value is in the integrated ecosystem. Also ask about the pricing difference between Denticon alone and the full stack.

What Users Actually Say

What people love

  • Cloud pioneer credibility. 20+ years of cloud-based operation. This isn't a company that recently ported an on-premises product to the cloud — Denticon was born there.
  • DSO-grade scalability. Coast Dental (88 locations) and Sage Dental (140 locations) choosing Denticon in 2025-2026 validates the enterprise scale. One CEO credited Denticon's cloud capabilities with enabling their growth rate.
  • The ecosystem play. Denticon + Apteryx + Cloud 9 + MyTooth + Planet DDS Pay under one company is genuinely compelling. One relationship, one support team, integrated products.
  • Migration experience. One longtime Dentrix user called switching to Denticon "one of the most significant beneficial changes we've ever made." Multiple group practices praise the transition experience.
  • Device-agnostic imaging. Apteryx works with any sensor manufacturer, and unlimited cloud storage with no caps on support tickets is a strong imaging proposition.

What people note

  • Pricing requires a demo. No published pricing, which is standard for enterprise dental platforms. A "See Denticon Plans" page exists but isn't easily accessible.
  • Product naming takes a moment to learn. Planet DDS, Denticon, DentalOS, Apteryx, Cloud 9, MyTooth, Legwork — the ecosystem has multiple product names. New buyers may want to request a clear overview of how the products fit together during their demo.
  • MyTooth is brand new. Launched January 2026, the patient engagement layer is still establishing its track record. Practices evaluating patient engagement capabilities should ask about roadmap and current capabilities.
  • Solo practice positioning. Planet DDS markets primarily to DSOs and groups. A solo practitioner may find more tailored options in MOGO, DentiMax, or Open Dental, which are designed with smaller practices in mind.
  • AI features are early and expanding. AI Voice Perio launched in February 2026. AI Assist is referenced but still developing. The AI story is promising and growing, with CareStack currently offering a more comprehensive AI suite for those who need it today.

Who Is Denticon Best For?

Great fit:

  • DSOs and multi-location dental groups (5-200+ locations) that need proven cloud scalability
  • Organizations that want PMS, imaging, ortho, patient engagement, and payments from one vendor
  • Groups with orthodontic locations that need Cloud 9's dedicated ortho PMS alongside general dentistry
  • Practices migrating from Dentrix or Eaglesoft that want a cloud platform with enterprise credibility
  • Organizations that value device-agnostic imaging and want full flexibility in sensor choices

May want to compare alternatives:

  • Solo practitioners looking for the most affordable or streamlined option
  • Practices that need transparent, published pricing before engaging with sales
  • Offices that need the most advanced AI feature set available today (CareStack or Curve may be further along)
  • Small practices that don't need enterprise-grade multi-location management

Alternatives to Consider

SoftwareWhy consider it
CareStackComparable multi-location depth with 55+ integrations and a more developed AI suite
tab32Enterprise-grade with superior data warehouse (BigQuery) for analytics-driven DSOs
Dentrix AscendThe Henry Schein cloud option — bigger brand recognition but likely higher total cost
Curve DentalSimpler cloud all-in-one for practices that want a more streamlined experience
MOGOPublished, all-inclusive pricing — if budget matters more than enterprise features

The Bottom Line

Planet DDS has spent 20+ years doing something most dental software companies are still figuring out: running a practice management system in the cloud at enterprise scale. The acquisition strategy — Apteryx for imaging, Cloud 9 for ortho, Legwork/MyTooth for engagement — has assembled a complete ecosystem under one roof. When Coast Dental (88 locations) and Sage Dental (140 locations) choose your platform in the same quarter, that's real market validation.

The DentalOS vision — an open API dental operating system — is the right long-term play for DSOs that need their PMS to integrate with custom workflows, analytics platforms, and operational tools. Denticon isn't trying to be the only software in your stack; it's trying to be the foundation everything else connects to.

An area of opportunity is communication and discoverability. The product ecosystem has multiple names, pricing requires a demo, and the AI features are still early. Planet DDS knows how to build enterprise software — as their market presence grows, more practices will discover what DSO operators already know.

For a multi-location group evaluating cloud platforms, Denticon belongs on the shortlist alongside CareStack and tab32. For a solo practice, there are simpler, more streamlined options designed specifically for that use case.
