What Is Ortho2?
Ortho2 is a practice management system built exclusively for orthodontic and pediatric dental practices. The company has been in the ortho PMS business for over 40 years, evolving from Apple III-based software in the early 1980s through DOS, Windows, and now cloud-native platforms.
The current product line includes two main offerings:
Edge Cloud: The flagship cloud-native platform launched in recent years. This is where all new development is focused. It runs in a browser, works from any device, and includes integrated imaging, patient communication, online scheduling, a patient rewards system, and treatment management -- all bundled in the base subscription.
Edge (on-premise): The traditional locally-installed version that many long-time customers still run. Still supported and updated, but Ortho2 is clearly steering new customers toward Edge Cloud.
Ortho2 partnered with Henry Schein in 2018 for distribution, giving the company access to Henry Schein's massive dental sales network. The company remains independently operated from its Ames, Iowa headquarters.
Who Is It For?
Ortho2 is built exclusively for orthodontists and pediatric dentists. The company does not try to serve general dentistry, and this specialization shows in every feature. Treatment cards, wire progression tracking, appliance management, retention scheduling, cephalometric integration, and ortho-specific insurance workflows are all native to the platform.
The system scales from solo orthodontists to multi-location groups. The multi-site management features support centralized reporting, cross-location scheduling, and standardized protocols across locations. DSOs with orthodontic divisions use Ortho2 alongside their general dental PMS.
Practices migrating from legacy systems like OrthoTrac or older versions of Dolphin will find Ortho2's data migration team experienced -- they have been converting competitors' data for decades.
Key Features
Integrated Imaging: Edge Cloud includes built-in image management, capture, and display without requiring a separate imaging application. Supports intraoral cameras, digital sensors, panoramic units, and cephalometric X-rays. Images are stored in the cloud and accessible from any location.
Patient Communication Suite: Automated appointment reminders, two-way texting, email campaigns, and a patient portal -- all built into the platform. No need for a separate Lighthouse or Solutionreach subscription.
Online Scheduling: Patients can book appointments through a web-based scheduler that syncs directly with the practice calendar. Customizable availability rules prevent overbooking.
Treatment Management: Ortho-specific treatment cards with wire sequences, appliance tracking, bracket placement records, and retention phase management. Treatment timelines with milestone tracking for each patient.
Rewards Program: Built-in patient rewards system that gamifies compliance -- patients earn points for good hygiene, on-time appointments, and referrals. This is a feature most competitors charge extra for or do not offer at all.
Financial Management: Insurance claim submission and tracking, payment plans, ledger management, and production reporting. Ortho-specific insurance logic handles lifetime maximums, age limitations, and coordination of benefits.
Multi-Location Management: Centralized dashboards, cross-location scheduling, standardized templates, and consolidated reporting for multi-office practices.
